Our pup was born April 13, 2004 from the pairing of Hope (Retriever female) and Prince (Poodle male).

Here is table of contents for the pics below. Note: I have condensed some of the older sections to include fewer pictures and movies (in order to save space).

First meeting with the Brown family

May 8, 2004 : Below are some pictures of the first meeting of the kids and the litter (3 1/2 weeks old). The pups were simply adorable! The pups were just over a pound each when born. Linda keeps the litter in a children's swimming pool right in her kitchen where they receive lots of attention. We also met a litter from Peaches that was 13 days older than our bunch... they were considerably larger, but just as sweet! Linda planned on introducing our pup's first dog food sometime during that weekend. By the time we visit again, the weaning process will probably be mostly complete (around 5 1/2 weeks).

I have to say that all of the pups were very social (although some were sleepier than others!). There was one particular pup who kept escaping the pool and had to be re-deposited into the bunch. Both Scott and I had the chance to lift one of the little guys up, and they were very relaxed during the handling, which is always a good indicator of how dominant a dog may turn out... they weren't totally placid (just a bit squirmy), but they didn't fight the contact, even at this small size!

Jason was particularly taken with the 'widdle wons' (the smaller pups). The girls gravitated to the older pups (they seemed to appreciate better how more fragile the younger pups were). Robbie liked them all, and Hope followed Scott around the entire time!

We also met Hope on the 8th, and she is a real sweetie! The most gentle, affectionate creature you would ever want to meet, although right now she is looking very tired as she was still nursing the pups. We didn't get to meet Prince as it had been raining all day and he was all muddy out in the yard! Perhaps next visit...

Linda (and her kids) do a wonderful job raising all these small creatures... their house and yard is positively full of cats (Siamese) and dogs (Retrievers, Spaniels, Huskies, Labs and Poodles), miscellaneous other pets (gekos etc), and kids (they have 4 teenage kids!). All of the animals we encountered were not only well cared for, but obviously loved as they all were very social, but well mannered! Kudos to Linda for managing such a busy place!

Second playdate for the kids and Buddy

May 21st we went back to visit the puppies... and this time took some movies of puppies at play. Click here for one of the movies (about 28MB).

Here are some of the still pictures from the 'event'...

Jason was a little off colour the day of the visit... we had to wake him up from a deep sleep in the car on the way to Doodle Lane. We think he was also a bit overwhelmed at the number of little bodies yelping and romping around. He was even too shy (or uncertain) to hold one of the pups. Look for him in the movies above. I suppose it's better that he is a bit reserved at this age with the pups rather than overly physical with them! I'm sure things will change when Buddy comes home!

We also got to meet Prince, Buddy's father, on the 21st. He is a very large boy (taller than Scott when up on his hind legs), but ever so social. Unfortunately we didn't think to take his pic, but the one at the top of this page does him (if not his size!) justice.

Puppy pick up

On June 4th, 2004 we went back out to pick up Buddy at the farm. Here are some stick shots

Robbie with Buddy

Buddy travelled really well.. he allowed us to put on a harness and use a 'doggy seatbelt' which clipped directly into our seatbelt buckle. He made it home with no messes and with absolutely no stress (he slept between Sarah and Christine the entire way).

First afternoon home

Buddy had a wild time in our backyard the first afternoon! Although he was raised out on a farm, we quickly realized how quiet our neighbourhood was in comparison to the traffic noise of the highway he lived on. He kept stopping to listen to the sounds... children in neighbouring yards, the hoard of songbirds which share the yards, even the wooden wind chimes that we and our neighbour have out back... By the end of the afternoon he had learned to sit on cue (for a treat), had jumped through hoops (literally) and explored most of the yard...

Awww... isn't he cute?!

Here are some movies of the pup and the family the afternoon he came home...

First weekend home

Buddy has had many new experiences in his first weekend home... and we have learned lots about him too!

He loves balls and nylabones... he very much enjoys pulling around our nylon skipping ropes and has a particular fondness for a rainbow coloured one. He enjoys his Royal Canin food (for large breed puppies of course!), and the Iams puppy bisciuts we treat him to... Buddy also LOVES towels... he has one he likes to pull around with him everywhere. He even let Robbie wrap him up in one and then walked around the kitchen wearing it, peaking out from little opening in the front (he thought he was cool!).

Buddy also loves playing in the dirt! He spent some time with Jason digging in the 'digging garden' already..

We have him walking on a leash with a harness already. As Linda and I chuckled about when we picked him up, he only goes about 3 driveways before flopping on the grass exhausted, but until then he walks without chewing or fighting the leash!

And most of all, he LOVES water... we put a bit of water in a splash pool I picked up (I figured the blow up one from previous years wouldn't last long with puppy nails and teeth). First of all he traced the hose back to the tap, and now he knows where to check for drips when he is in the yard... Then he learned how to jump in and out of the pool (he has also mastered the deck stairs; up and down). Jason even poured water directly over his back and he didn't even mind! He also learned to follow me when I go near the rainbarrel to fill up the watering can... he tries to get his nose inside the opening of the can while it is filling up!

He has met most of the neighbours, many of the neighbourhood kids have visited us, and he has even walked (ie. been carried!) to drop the kids off at school, where of course he received hoards of admirers with no sign of stress. What a trooper...

Here are just some of the pics...

Now we have 5 water monsters...

Digging buddies

I don't know who is having more fun... Buddy, the kids, all the visitors or Scott and I!! I'd say it's about even! Stay tuned for some movies... he is cute in the still pictures, but he is even more adorable in action! He has a great little personality about him, and he is quickly secured his place in the family 'pack' as part teddy bear, part baby and part devil child.
